Reception – Early Years Foundation Stage

Welcome to Reception! The Reception year provides the building blocks for children’s future learning – we want the children to be happy, confident, resilient learners of the future.

Your child will learn through play in our spacious, well-resourced Reception class, both inside and out, carefully supported by experienced adults, as well as taking part in adult-led activities. Learning outside offers huge benefits for young children and the Reception class has a large, outdoor area so the children have the opportunity to explore the natural world and develop physical strength and coordination. We also make frequent use of the field and woodland areas in the school grounds, and explore our village on local walks.

We support children to develop how they learn – encouraging active engagement, being willing to have a go, to persevere when there are challenges and to develop their critical thinking.

Children are cared for and valued and and links are made with their experiences outside school. We share stories, songs and poems together every day, and children encouraged to develop and perform their own stories regularly.

The things your child will be learning in Reception are set out in the EYFS Framework, and are organised into three prime areas and four specific areas:

Prime Areas:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication & Language
  • Physical Development

Specific Areas:

  • Literacy (Reading & Writing)
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design
